I tried to find plus size clothes at Kohl’s and it didn’t go well
I have a Kohl’s credit card. I didn’t mean to get it. I was shopping for a baby shower gift a few years ago and they offered me some sort of amazing discount if I signed up. I didn’t have the best credit history at the time so I was pretty sure I’d be denied. But oh no, for some reason the debt lords thought I needed to dig myself just a little bit deeper… I was approved.
I really only use my Kohl’s card if I’m between paychecks which I receive weekly thanks to this automatic pay stub generator and need something specific, like black no show socks. I really wish I could put my Kohl’s card to good use and get myself some cute clothes… but their plus size clothes are just the WORST. They look like they have been transported here from 1997.
There’s lots of large shirts, with no definitive shape, out dated patterns and the kind of shapeless khaki Capri pants that are on the short side so they hit you just past the knee where your calf is at it’s widest.
I’m pretty sure that Kohl’s plus size department caters to women who never quite moved past the style they were wearing 25 years ago. It’s what they’re comfortable in and Kohl’s is probably one of the last places they can find those elastic waist Capri pants. While I am glad these women can find clothes that they feel comfortable and confident in, I really wish Kohl’s could add a few more updated pieces. Or better yet, just offer more sizes in the cute clothes they have in the other sections of their store!
I am only 5ft tall and size 18/20. I shop mostly at Torrid, ModCloth, Unique Vintage and Hot Topic, with a few pieces here and there from Lane Bryant. I do look a little on the young side for my age, but don’t want to wear outdated clothing.
I decided to head to kohls to really show you what I mean….
First here is a photo of what I wore to Kohl’s so you can see what I actually look like in what I think are great clothing choices. I personally prefer more form fitting clothing. I like my curvy shape. (I got this outfit at Lane Bryant. I am a big fan of these leggings, which have cute lace at the bottom and also POCKETS!)
First I stopped in the woman’s department, just to be sure that they really don’t offer clothing in my size there. Sure enough, all jeans and bottoms that I saw went to size 14. Most of the tops went to an XXL. I decided to try on a couple things to make sure I couldn’t just wear the XXL in the non plus size woman’s department.
Disney style is my thing, so I tried on a cute Stitch top first. Keep in mind, this was not supposed to be a crop top… I have nothing against crop tops. I own a few, but this top was just stretched causing it to appear shorter. So basically this XXL Stitch top did not fit.
Next I tried a yellow pattern top with a red jacket. The top was stretched to its limits and the jacket wouldn’t close. So it’s safe to say that clothes at Kohls in the non plus department do not really fit me.
Next I headed to the woman’s plus size department. I picked out a bunch of clothes, hoping I might find something cute. I told myself if I found something cute, I’d treat myself. But alas, this was not the case.
I started with a green and yellow flower top and a pair of jeans. The jeans had an elastic waist. It was a big no, but certainly not the worst outfit I tried. (Why yes, I am wearing mis-matched socks)
The next two outfits were similar. I tried a pair of white shorts and pink pattern top. Then a pair of khaki Capri’s with a different pink pattern top. The white shorts had an elastic waist and while they were pretty comfy, I didn’t like the way I looked in them.
The worst by far were the khaki Capri’s, white top and fleece lumberjack vest.
I tried a light pink top with a heart pattern. The lack of any definitive shape really didn’t make me happy. The only thing I’d say didn’t look bad, was the plain white top I wore under the lumberjack vest.
I wish I could say that I happened to have found the absolute worst selection of clothes I could find just to prove my point. But no, seriously guys, the other clothes they had were basically everything you see me wearing in these photos just in other colors and patterns. Oh, but they did also have some large unflattering fuzzy sweaters. Maybe Kohl’s will do some updates one day, but I’m not holding my breath.
