The Question: A Reflection on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Today we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, as we reflect on his impact and legacy, it’s likely that we’re thinking about the current state of the U.S. We may feel uncertain about positivity. Dreams of peace and equality might seem obscured by the hate and violence we see on our tv and phones. Those are normal reactions to a tumultuous, traumatic time.
Dr. King led and inspired during another time of conflict and injustice. He advocated for peaceful protest, while challenging the most solid structures of oppression. His name is one that children learn as an example of courage, leadership… and tragedy. Today, millions of individuals and companies will share pieces of Dr. King’s inspirational calls to action, and his desire for all people to enjoy equality and freedom. We have chosen to share the challenge he put forth in a sermon in Montgomery, Alabama in 1957:
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”
Our work here at Bold grows every day, as we expand our advocacy efforts beyond body politics. We owe a great deal of thanks to many of our partners and collaborators, for providing insight and clarification that was essential to understanding how to be effective allies.
We have tried to provide thoughtful, inspiring stories, while also expressing genuine sadness, empathy and even rage. And we’ve learned that sometimes, taking a step back and listening is more important than publishing or posting.
Bold will always be present and vocal in supporting calls for justice. We are grateful that you’ve joined us in our mission.
